A Bangladeshi construction worker has died after an accident on the site of Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa. The Genting-owned casino resort is completing a $5bn expansion, including improvements to its aquarium where the incident took place on Sunday.

pronounced him dead on the scene at around 8am

According to The Strait Times, the 44-year-old worker lost his life after a steel structure collapsed on the site of the new Singapore Oceanarium. First responders pronounced him dead on the scene at around 8am.

“As a general safety measure, lifting equipment and supporting structures must be properly designed, installed and inspected,” Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower said following the incident, declaring that it had ordered the contractor to halt work on the site. It is not treating the death as suspicious.

In addition to its new aquarium, the resort is adding 700 hotel rooms and updating its Universal Studios Singapore. The latter will include an immersive themed zone and Illumination’s Minion Land, expected to open along with the Oceanarium in 2025.

Singapore is currently Asia’s second biggest casino destination behind Macau. However, gambling advocates in the Philippines are hopeful their nation can take the second spot thanks to eight new casino projects. In contrast, Singapore has just Resorts World and Marina Bay Sands with no plans for new casinos.
