The 1 October Memorial Committee has agreed on the design for a permanent memorial marking the deadly mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip that claimed 58 lives. The massacre took place in October 2017 after a gunman opened fire from the Mandalay Bay Hotel on a country music festival taking place below.

the Commission ultimately decided on the “Forever One” design

The Committee, appointed by the Clark County Commission after the incident, had five designs to choose from. Chairwoman Tennille Pereira said each decision taken by the group caused “strong emotional reactions,” but the Commission ultimately decided on the “Forever One” design from JCJ Architecture.

This design features 58 candle-like beams casting light on visitors in a park on the concert venue’s northeast corner. A further 22,000 lights will represents the size of the crowd on that fateful day. Then, a looping path will take people through the garden area to a remembrance ring showcasing the 58 candles, with each beam containing a photo and the name of a victim.

The Committee selected the concept after three years of planning. The Clark County Commission is due to receive an official recommendation from the Committee in September. It will serve as a separate memorial to the one downtown built just days after the shooting.
