A group of leading gambling operators received the biggest-ever Maryland State Board of Elections fine for not complying with the state’s 48-hour disclosure requirements. The Sports Betting Alliance has to pay a $48,000 financial penalty.

The board’s Director of Candidacy and Campaign Finance, Jared DeMarinis, spoke about the decision, saying: “We’re cracking down hard on disclosure with independent expenditure entities.”

All of the money coming from fines goes toward public campaign financing.

Sports Betting Alliance is a group that represents online gambling interests and includes FanDuel, BetMGM, and DraftKings. The issue in this case dates back to the 2020 campaign when the public was voting on the legalization of sports betting.

A spokesperson for the group explained that the compliance team made a filing error which led to the penalty; the error was corrected immediately after it was discovered. The operators now have online sports betting licenses in the state.
