A pop-up casino in Las Vegas operated under a tent for eight hours in order to retain its gaming license. Erected on the site of the former home of The Beach nightclub, the makeshift casino housed 16 old-school video poker machines.

A Nevada Gaming Commission spokesperson confirmed that Century Gaming Technologies operated the temporary casino to preserve the gaming license. The site in question is “grandfathered to conduct nonrestricted gaming operations without being a resort hotel.” That grandfathered status expires if more than 24 months go by without any form of gaming taking place at the Marriott International-owned location.

It was the tenth time in a 17-year period that a temporary casino opened at the location. The Nevada Gaming Commission informed a legal representative for Marriott International that this sort of license preservation cannot continue indefinitely and that it needs to put a definitive plan in place. The company’s intentions with the site reportedly have been held back due to the pandemic and the unstable economic situation.
