The NFL has announced the suspension of five players for violating the league’s gambling policy. Detroit Lions wide receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams got six-game bans, while their teammates defensive back C.J. Moore and wide receiver Quintez Cephus received indefinite suspensions. The fifth player is Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, who was also suspended indefinitely.

NFL did not find any evidence that players used inside information or compromised any games?

The three players who received indefinite suspensions placed wagers on NFL games, while the others bet on college football games while at a team facility. The NFL did not find any evidence that players used inside information or compromised any games when placing bets. ESPN reported that Berryhill and Williams engaged in mobile betting at the Lions’ training facility and headquarters.

NFL players and team staff are not allowed to wager on any NFL-related markets. They also can’t place bets when they are at a team facility or traveling with their team.

After the news of the suspensions late Friday morning, the Lions announced that they released Moore and Cephus. The team was aware of the NFL’s investigation for about a month. Several team staff members were also let go last month for gambling policy violations. Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes said that the players “exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules.”

These five players are the latest to violate the NFL’s gambling policy. Only recently, Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley was reinstated to the NFL after being suspended for the entirety of the 2022 season.
