The Dutch gambling regulator has published a summary of the first full year of legal iGaming in the country. In this week’s annual report, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) said that an estimated 85% of online gamblers in the country now use licensed platforms. The regulator has issued 24 licenses so far, with more than a dozen applications currently pending.

Over 36,000 people are now signed up for CRUKs, the Netherlands’ centralized gambling exclusion register. Those who add themselves to CRUKS cannot gamble on high-risk games of chance in person or online.

record amount of fines in 2022, nearly €30m

KSA handed out a record amount of fines in 2022, nearly €30m ($32m). Many of these penalties relate to gambling advertising breaches or platforms illegally targeting players in the region.

The legal online gambling market in the Netherlands officially launched on October 1, 2021.

KSA chairman René Jansen has mixed feelings about the first calendar year of legal iGaming. He believes that there is a lot of room for licensees to improve when it comes to their approach to responsible gambling.
