An upcoming transition

DraftKings has teamed up with the Oregon Lottery for online sports betting, and the sportsbook operator has now revealed the timeline it will follow to become exclusive provider.

The transition to DraftKings will begin on January 18

The announcement on Wednesday provides details as to how the DraftKings Sportsbook will take the place of the current Scoreboard sportsbook in the state. The transition to DraftKings will begin on January 18, with existing Scoreboard users then able to register for an account with DraftKings and transfer funds to its app.

Most functionality of the Scoreboard offering will end once the migration begins. However, users will still have access to withdraw funds and view account or transaction information for the six months following the transition. All open bets on Scoreboard will remain active until their settlement.

Excitement among both parties

DraftKings co-founder and president of global technology and product Paul Liberman welcomed the upcoming transition in advance of the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl. He said: “The Oregon Lottery shares our innovative spirit as one of the most progressive organizations in the real-money gaming sector.”

DraftKings also has a commitment to environmental campaigns in Oregon. Through its work with the Arbor Day Foundation, the operator has funded the planting of more than 110,000 trees in the state to help with fire rehabilitation.

Oregon Lottery director Barry Pack expressed excitement about working with DraftKings and giving state residents the ability to place same game parlay wagers. He said: “We see benefits for Lottery too, as the shift to DraftKings means fewer third-party service providers and a simpler financial structure for player accounts.”

Expanding its reach

This is the second exclusive deal DraftKings has signed with a state lottery, having also entered an agreement in 2019 with the New Hampshire Lottery.

DraftKings-owned SBTech originally powered the Scoreboard app, with the Oregon Lottery looking after the operations. The pair first announced a possible switchover last February and the Oregon Lottery Commission approved the move in August. Officials believe that the transition will enhance the user experience.

DraftKings acquired SBTech in December 2019. SBTech launched the Scoreboard sportsbook in Oregon the previous month, which made it the first online sportsbook under the operation of a US state lottery.

The Boston-based sportsbook operator now has an online and/or retail sportsbook presence in 18 states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Illinois. Most recently, DraftKings launched an online sportsbook in New York on Saturday. This was the first time that operators could go live with their online sportsbooks in the country’s fourth most populated state.
