Eyewitness filmed panicked casino guests

The run-up to Easter weekend kicked off with two violent incidents on the US gambling scene, with gunfire inside Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi, and the alleged assault of a man taken from Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

eyewitness was playing a table game of roulette when he heard “a loud pop”

Late in the evening of April 2, Biloxi TV station WLOX received multiple reports of a gunshot inside Treasure Bay Casino, situated beside a beach on the Gulf of Mexico. An eyewitness at the scene, Jeremy Pellegrin, caught phone footage of panicked casino patrons he described as “running out of” their shoes to find cover. The eyewitness was playing a table game of roulette when he heard “a loud pop”.

Describing the ensuing chaos as patrons fled for cover, Pellegrin noted several discarded mismatching pairs of flip-flops and slides. It seemed “the last thing you were thinking about was grabbing your flip-flops”, he told WLOX.

The Biloxi Police Department said the gunfire resulted from an accidental discharge. The man responsible, whom police identified and charged with discharging a gun in city limits, reportedly “suffered a superficial leg wound.”

While dust settles in Biloxi, Connecticut police identify suspects

No harm came to guests or staff at the Biloxi casino, other than the man who shot himself in the leg. Treasure Bay CEO Susan Varnes told WLOX that her firm “handled the situation professionally, clearing the casino floor quickly.”

Over a thousand miles north on the East Coast, Connecticut State Police asked the public for assistance in identifying two suspects believed to have allegedly assaulted a man on March 29 after taking him from Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Connecticut State Police Troop E Montville posted footage of the suspects on Facebook:

***Subjects Identified***

After originally asking for assistance, Connecticut Police have since updated their post to say “subjects identified”, and to thank the public for its help.

According to WWLP-22News, state police troopers responded to a report of a man transported from Mohegan Sun to a Jewett City business. Here, the two suspects removed the man from the vehicle, allegedly assaulting him and stealing some of his items.

Mohegan Sun attracts mixed publicity

The Mohegan Sun’s link with last week’s alleged assault follows a February 2020 incident at the same facility. At the time, rapper Nelly got into an argument with another patron and a casino pit boss, with the confrontation caught on video.

Publicity of a more positive nature arrived a little under two weeks ago. The Virgin Hotels Las Vegas Mohegan Sun Casino finally opened its doors to the public on March 25, 2021 after pandemic-related issues delayed its launch.

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut is the operator of the Uncasville Mohegan Sun Casino and the first Native American tribe to run a casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Parent company Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment obtained the rights to operate the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas casino floor following a selection process in 2019.
